In collaboration with KBC this valuable market insight is translated into concepts that can be tested and assessed by KBC. This includes extensive consumer testing to give a more accurate prediction of consumer appeal.

In addition, the performance on orchard as well as throughout the supply chain is assessed from multiple locations. When sufficient data has been collected to enable an accurate assessment of the costs, benefits and risks associated with each candidate, KBC makes a recommendation for further pre-commercial evaluation to Zespri. Despite the years of extensive research and comprehensive data provided, commercialisation is not guaranteed, as cultivars still need to be put through their paces at scale. Only the most outstanding candidates are expected to progress to full commercial release.
